Imagination and Plans

Now that I have returned to the land of white sandy beaches, kangaroos and vegemite, I find myself often sitting here with my imagination running wild. Planning my next travels before I have even gotten my first pay check, thinking of all the exotic places that I desperately want to see, the foods  that I want to try and the people that I am yet to meet. I never thought that I would miss living out of a suitcase, sharing a bedroom with 11 strangers and getting lost everywhere, as much as this. Im pining for adventure, for open minded people and new places. So here I have found myself listing the countries on various continents that I dream about visiting, one day, soon.

Madrid

The first city in a long time that I have fallen in love with. Driving through, before I had even gotten off the bus, I felt a sense of excitement move through my body.  There are so many cafes and tapas bars as you walk through the streets, with a very relaxed vibe about it. Unfortunately, I wasn’t in this city for as long as I would have liked. I spent half a morning walking through the ‘Mercado de San Miguel’,  looking at the fresh fruit stalls, tapas stalls, olive stalls and fresh fish stalls. Walked through and window shopped in the Plaza de San Miguel, which is one of the main shopping squares. Decided to go get Sangria and Tapas. Originally when the tapas were brought out, I was disappointed, as they had literally just dumped some croquettes, potato wedges and some bread with meat onto a plate. I was so used to the tapas bars in Australia where each plate comes out presented nicely. However, my disappointment was short lived because the food was delicious! I then decided I wanted churros and went in search of a place that could curb my cravings. Asked the waiter for churros  and sangria- got a lecture on how he refused to serve the churros with the sangria because it wouldn’t go down well together. He then gave me the BEST sangria of my life, but of course with no churros. After arguing with him again for a good couple of minutes, he eventually presented me with the churros I had been craving, whilst muttering under his breath that I was mad and that churros was for breakfast not dinner. In my opinion, it was a great combination and I had a wonderful night. Madrid- I will be back to explore more soon!

Nice

Driving along the coast of the south of France was breathtaking. Not only was my breath taken away by the magnificent view, but by how much money the people in this area have. Monaco – my new life goal is to find a husband from here!! Spent my days in Nice relaxing on the pebble beaches. The turquoise clear water was surprisingly warm. Wandered through the flower markets and ate gelato every day of course. Went “window shopping” and spent money I don’t have on new clothes.  Left Nice feeling vey relaxed, tanned and oh so broke!

Milan

Stayed at a hostel called the ‘Scream House’. I am still very curious as to why its called that, but the owner just said she had been trying to change the name for years. It looks like a haunted house from the outside,  you have to buzz the intercom to get through the gate, walk up stairs and you find yourself looking at a BIG door. Once you walk in, there is a marble staircase leading up to the reception. It is a beautiful old building,  however the first night was like something out of a horror movie – the owner kicked someone out at 1130pm, into a massive thunderstorm. Possibly some of the loudest thunder I have ever heard, I did not sleep that night. The rest of my time spent in this city was pleasent. I went for a walk around the main square, tried some of the best gelato I have ever had from a place called Cioccolati Italiani. They pour melted chocolate at the bottom of the cone before adding the gelato it was AMAZING! I was lucky enough that Milan was the host for the World Expo this year. So I went and wondered through the different stalls that countries from all over the world had put together-showing sustainabilty and how they are trying to stop poverty. I highly recommend it for anyone who is in milan to go see.

Lauterbrunnen

The scenery on the way to this beautiful place was amazing!  Surrounded by high mountains, it is a picture of blue glacier lakes, cute swiss houses,  green ‘carpets’ of grass with cows  and waterfalls every where you look. There are 72 waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen alone! I thought I was in heaven. Spent my first day meeting up with my family who are lucky enough to live in Switzerland, and went up the Stockhorn mountain which is 2,190m in elevation.  Thats one high mountain compared to what I am used to from canada!  The views at the top were magnificent, its just mountain after mountain in the distance,  you can even see MontBlanc in France. Watched some traditional swiss yodeling and music back at the Jungfrau camp site. The second day, again I spent it with my family and this time we went to visit the Trümmelbach falls – 10 glacier waterfalls inside a mountain -it was insane! Had a picnic next to a stream and enjoyed swiss chocolate and cheese.
